All cells have characteristic structures (antigens) on the surface of the cell. Our immune system detects therefore foreign surfaces and is able to fight against these cells. The distinction between self and foreign is the basic precondition for the immunity. Penetrating foreign bodies are combated by different types of leukocytes (white blood cells) that absorb and digest (phagocytose) them or fight them by the issuance of lytic substances. Immune response proceeds always the same way. The cells involved in the non-specific immunity represent approximately 75% of leukocytes.

Form expert groups in the class for each cell type (such as stem cell group, granulocytes group, macrophages group, group of B-lymphocytes and so on). Discuss the development, the structure and the function of each cell type in each group. Each group then sends an expert to the next group, and there reports the results of the own group. Each group documents its results on a large sheet of paper. All results are compiled at the end on a poster. Present and discuss your results on a whiteboard or beamer as well.
