Cells of the Immune system

All cells have characteristic structures (antigens) on the surface of the cell. Our immune system detects therefore foreign surfaces and is able to fight against these cells. The distinction between self and foreign is the basic precondition for the immunity. Penetrating foreign bodies are combated by different types of leukocytes (white blood cells) that absorb and digest (phagocytose) them or fight them by the issuance of lytic substances. Immune response proceeds always the same way. The cells involved in the non-specific immunity represent approximately 75% of leukocytes.
About 25% of leukocytes involved in the specific immunity with very targeted reactions. As well as the lymphatic system, the specific immune response, is to find only in vertebrates.
During the course of the specific immune response, special defense mechanisms be developed for any foreign body: Appropriate antibodies are synthesized and specific defence and memory cells activated. At a repeating penetration of a foreign body, the immune system thus can respond more quickly and prevent the outbreak of the disease. The specific immunity is acquired only in the course of life.
